“HOLLYWOOD star Minnie Driver has weighed in on a debate over the future of one of Wales’ last open-air swimming pools.

The actress, who was spotted yesterday filming in her dad’s home city of Swansea, launched a campaign via Twitter to save the 80-year-old Brynaman Lido in Carmarthenshire.

The working lido was to be used for the film Hunky Dory, a musical by Patagonia director Marc Evans about a set of teenagers and their teacher who try to put on an end-of-year show.

Writing on her Twitter page yesterday, the 40-year-old Good Will Hunting star said: “We are on a mission to save the last Lido in Wales! Its in Bryn Amman and it is FANTASTIC.

The sometime-musician later suggested ideas to fundraise for the lido, including holding a charity screening of the film and taking part in a charity gig.

The Brynaman Lido was built during the depression of the early 1930s by out-of-work voluntary labourers, who were often paid in cigarettes and chocolate. More than 100,000 gallons of water are siphoned off from the River Amman to fill the open-air pool, which opens for just two months in the summer and remains closed the rest of the year.

It is believed to be one of the last open-air pools in Wales.”
