Carmarthenshire People First Accolade

Posted on Monday, July 20, 2009

Carmarthenshire People First were finalists at the Social Care Accolades award ceremony in Cardiff in June.

cpf-july09Their new training programme “Keeping Yourself Safe” was one of 14 finalists to attend the ceremony at City Hall, Cardiff in June.

The idea of the programme is to help people with learning disabilities stay safe by learning how to recognise abuse and report it.

As part of the “Keeping Yourself Safe” programme, four people with learning disabilities were trained on how to help teach the course along with a team of specialist consultants.

“Raising awareness about the protection of vulnerable adults is very important,” said Gareth Seabrook, one of the four trainers who runs the programme.

Janice Martin from Carmarthenshire People First said: “Due to the success of the first two courses, we have plans to develop even more. We make sure each training session is tailor-made, making use of pictures, role-play and DVDs to meet the needs of our different audiences.”

Due to the positive outcomes of the programme, other local authorities in Wales are now keen to adopt the training model.
