WCVA Volunteering Conference – Volunteers in Focus 15/09/10

wcvaThe third sector is built on the remarkable efforts of its volunteers. The Volunteering Conference 2010 – titled Volunteers in focus – seeks to celebrate those who work so hard to help others, as well as explore ways for groups to develop working practices which respect and enhance the experience of volunteers.

The conference, which takes place at the Galeri, Caenarfon, on Wednesday 15 September, will feature contributions from many respected faces in the volunteering community.

Chaired by Bethan Russell Williams of Mantel Gwynedd, the day will feature a plenary session from Richard Andrews, of Corporate Instinct Ltd, called Timebanking – lessons and challenges for volunteering. There will also be a number of thought-provoking workshops, including Volunteering programmes: the two-way approach by Reverend Wynne Roberts of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Involving volunteers through consultation and feedback from Melanie Andrews of Barnardos Cymru. There will even be a Volunteering Dragons’ Den, in which a youth panel will assess a series of volunteering opportunities.

Perhaps you run a group that hopes to attract more voluntary workers, or maybe you’re a volunteer in need of up-to-date news on the issues affecting you. Either way, the Volunteering Conference 2010 will offer you vital information and a unique opportunity for networking. It’s an invaluable event for the entire sector. Don’t miss out.

Become a Youth Volunteer 15/05/10

vbx_logo

An event aimed at attracting more adult volunteers to work with youth organisations in Carmarthenshire will be held at CAVS, The Mount, Carmarthen between 9:30am and 12pm on Saturday May 15th 2010.

Following an initial idea from The Prince of Wales, Uniformed Services delivering activities for young people in Wales have signed a memorandum of understanding to work together under the banner of Dreigiau Ifanc / Young Dragons.

The event will give people an insight into volunteering and information on the Uniformed Services within the county.

Carmarthenshire is one of two pilots areas in Wales that will develop Young Dragons and organisations including Carmarthenshire Council, CAVS, Dyfed Powys Police, Scouts, Guides and Army Cadets, the Young Farmers, Urdd are all working together to get more people involved in activities available across the county.

The overall aim of Young Dragons is to increase the number of volunteers to help run uniformed youth organisations and increase the numbers of young people across Wales who are members of a uniformed youth organisation and, in the long term, ensure that every young person in Wales has the opportunity to become a member. Young Dragons is not about changing what is already in existence but about engaging young people in a range of positive activities and to help prevent anti-social behaviour.

The scheme aims to give young people the opportunity to belong to a well established organisation offering adventure, experience and education; whilst at the same time developing life skills and encouraging social integration and educational engagement.

This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to take on voluntary work and to work with young people. Many volunteers are surprised at how much fun it can be to help others and while not every volunteer experience is the same, but by finding an opportunity that matches your interests, you have a good chance of having fun while giving time.

For further information about Young Dragons and the voluntary opportunities available, call in on May 15th or contact Fflur Hughes, Youth Volunteering Officer on 01267 245 555 or email fflur@cavs.org.uk

Age Concern Sir Gâr Befriending Project

ageconcern

Volunteers wanted to befriend older people.

Residents of Carmarthenshire are being offered an opportunity to befriend older people in an innovative project beginning this month. Age Concern Sir Gâr have secured funding to support volunteers befriend older people across the county. They will be taking them out to meet other older people and enjoy trips to local groups, or the shops and generally become more active in their communities.

Age Concern Sir Gâr regularly receives phone calls for help from both clients and the statutory and voluntary sector. Some of these clients have experienced bereavement and now find that they don’t get as many offers to socialise as they used to get and feel uncomfortable going away on their own. Befriending Circles has a risen from all those comments that Age Concern Sir Gâr receive.

Project Coordinator, Rebecca Thomas added, ‘This project is a lovely opportunity for volunteers who enjoy socialising and would like to spend a little bit of time befriending an older person. We are looking for people across the county who are willing to give up an hour or two and use their cars to help older people get out and about. Our funding means we can cover petrol expenses so volunteers won’t be out of pocket. We would love to hear from people with a car who would like to get involved.’

Retired teacher and mother of two Margaret Keen, who is looking forward to volunteering with the project, said ‘My husband and I do voluntary work because we want to give back to our community. We find we actually benefit from befriending others as much as they benefit! It’s wonderful to be involved in our community.’ Mrs Keen is already actively volunteering within the county and is looking forward to increasing her volunteering by befriending an older person.

Age Concern Sir Gâr was founded in 1995 and has gradually increased its service provision which potentially can provide a range for services to over 48,000 older people in the County out of a total population of over 172,000 (2001 Census). Other services include debt and benefits advice, the handyperson scheme, gardening support scheme and a tax advice service.

If you would like more information about how to become a volunteer on the Befriending Circles project please contact Age Concern Sir Gâr on 01554 784 080.

Venue: Communities First Portacabin, Penyfan Park
Date: Thursday 18th March
Time: 9.00 am Coffee, 9.30 am Prompt start, 4.30 pm Finish

Working in your community

Introduction

This course is A MUST for anyone working within the community they live. It will help you define your boundaries. Learn to say ‘No’ and still stay engaged with your neighbourhood. How to refer effectively and how to maintain your privacy and family life. Create independence among the people you support.

Other issues covered are confidentiality and personal safety.

A highly interactive, fun and energising workshop where you can share experiences with fellow workers.

Content

This course examines what it’s like to be a community activist in your own neighbourhood.

We explore roles and boundaries and the distinction between what discussions may be acceptable as a resident and what restrictions may be put on you as an activist or community worker.

The session provides the skills to maintain your home life and privacy and be able to say no to unreasonable requests or visits to your home during family time.

Learn to delegate and refer on, enabling residents to access the best quality support and avoid you burning out.

Developing the capacity of other residents is something that some community activists may be reluctant to do. We examine why developing the capacity of the wider community and the positive benefits for you as an activist.

We look at the stages new groups inevitably go through and the appropriate level of support for each stage.

Finally, what to do if it goes wrong. Dealing with conflict and personal verbal attacks. How to avoid getting into disagreements and where to get support to resolve them.

Course suitable for

Citizens Advice new Adviceline Cymru needs Volunteers

citizansadvice_000

Citizens Advice has launched a new telephone service in Wales: Adviceline Cymru and is looking for English and Welsh speaking volunteers to help answer the phones.

Citizens Advice is a charity which depends on its team of over 21,000 volunteers to provide accessible, quality-assured advice in over 3,300 locations across England and Wales.

Put simply, without our volunteers we would not be able to respond to the needs and demands of the millions of people who contact us for help every year. Volunteering is at the heart of the Citizens Advice service.

Adviceline Cymru is a bilingual service, which provides callers with information, sets up face-to-face CAB appointments as needed and recommends local organisations and services that can help further.

In October 2009 the Welsh Assembly Government provided extra funding for the Adviceline Cymru pilot and it is now ready to expand. Citizens Advice is leading the recruitment strategy and developing promotional materials to recruit right across Wales.

Full training will be provided for all Adviceline Cymru volunteers, including support to brush up Welsh speaking skills, if needed. People from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply and the recruitment campaign is hoping to attract over 250 new volunteers by the end of the year.

For more information contact Ria Batten, Support Services Officer, Citizens Advice Cymru, Tel: 02920 376768 or 02920 376750, email Ria.Batten@citizensadvice.org.uk.
