Consultation on proposals to reallocate National Lottery shares 21/08/10
Posted on Thursday, July 22, 2010
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is consulting on proposals to reallocate national lottery shares, and is asking for responses by 21 August 2010.
For full details of the consultation, go to: http://www.culture.gov.uk/consultations/default.aspx
The current distribution sees 50% of the total ‘good causes’ funding go to the Big Lottery Fund, focusing on health, education, environment and charitable causes. The remainder is evenly distributed in shares of 16.7% to heritage (through the National Heritage Lottery Fund), sport (in Wales, through the Sports Council for Wales) and arts (in Wales, through the Arts Council for Wales).
The consultation asks the following questions of the third sector:
- How would the change benefit you or the sector?
- How would the proposed change disadvantage you or the sector?
- What impact would the changes have on organisations’ ability to deliver previously identified priorities or projects?
- Will the change have any adverse or positive impact on particular groups, taking into account race, gender, disability, age, faith/belief, sexual orientation, gender identity and socioeconomic equality? How could impacts be avoided or mitigated. Please provide evidence if possible.
In a separate announcement the government has flagged its intention that the BIG should exclusively fund the third sector (currently most of its funding goes to the sector, but it can also fund the public sector). This is not part of the current consultation, but WCVA also welcomes views on this proposal.
WCVA will be submitting a response to the consultation, and welcomes comments from interested organisations on the questions asked, and in particular:
- Their views on decreasing the share for the Big Lottery Fund
- Their views on increasing the share for heritage, sports and arts
- We also welcome views on:
- Should BIG exclusively fund the third sector?
- If funding for heritage, sports and arts is increased, should the additional funding be restricted to the third sector?
- Any other aspects of the Lottery funding?
