Disability Pride Cymru 2010 ~ Launch 3/12/09
Posted on Monday, November 30, 2009
Thursday December 3rd is the UN International Day of Disabled People.
It is also the launch date of Disability Pride Cymru 2010. The media launch at Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland will be to raise awareness of next year’s event and will be a gathering of supporters and a choir from Woodlands High Special School. We would be very pleased if you could join us.
Disability Pride Cymru is a partnership of most of the major charities and organisations working with and for disabled people living in Wales. Disability Pride Cymru 2010 will be an inclusive fun-filled family festival celebrating the achievements of disabled people, recognising their contribution to society and challenging stereotypical views of disability.
At Disability Pride Cymru 2010 there will be bands and choirs, dance, sports demonstrations (with a star or two helping out), a fashion show, comedy, workshops, funfair rides, stalls offering information and advice, plus locally produced food and drink. This will take place in Cardiff’s Oval Basin on June 12th 2010 and promises to be a great day out for everyone!
Disability Pride Cymru will shortly become registered as a charity with the Charity Commission. We have been successful in raising some funds as a collective of organisations, but we recognise the need to make a more formal and permanent arrangement. The funds raised so far are paying for hire fees, publicity costs, performers’ deposits, etc.
We intend that Disability Pride Cymru will become a Wales-wide annual celebration, with activities taking place simultaneously throughout Wales on the day. Cardiff Council Events Team is advising us and we think that we can realistically expect at least 10,000 visitors on the day. There is nothing else remotely like Disability Pride anywhere else in the UK, to our knowledge.
If you would like to be involved or would like to support us in some way, please contact:
