Coaching and Mentoring in the workplace – A practical programme for Third Sector CEOs

INTRODUCTION:

Within the Third Sector, the role of the CEO can be rather isolating; the demands and pressures of the role often limit opportunities for both professional and personal development of senior people within the organisation.  Rural settings often exacerbate this sense of isolation.

In recent times, however, coaching and mentoring have been identified as one of the most efficient, economic and effective ways of countering this sense of isolation “at the top”, enabling individuals to work within a 1:1 confidential and trusted relationship to share issues of concern, tackle problems and explore solutions.

CAVS is offering an exciting initiative in which CEOs will be able to work together to experience a practical skills-based coaching and mentoring learning programme while simultaneously working as pairs in peer coach/mentoring relationships.

The programme is delivered over a period of five weeks.

As well as providing support to each participating CEO, organisations will also benefit through the learning programme itself;  the resources provided will enable individual organisations to transfer the learning to its own workplace.   This will help to ensure sustainability and provide a tangible return on the investment.

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

AIM:    To equip participants (maximum 10) with the

  • Skills
  • Knowledge
  • Understanding

To enable them to work effectively as Peer Coach/Mentors in the workplace

OBJECTIVES:         By the end of the training workshop programme, participants will have:

  1. Understood what mentoring and coaching at work are and are not
  2. Understood the difference between coaching and mentoring
  3. Identified the “Six Building Blocks”  essential for effective coach/mentoring
  4. Identified and applied the five key skills of coach/mentoring in the workplace
    • Building rapport
    • Active Listening
    • Asking Insightful questions
    • Providing feedback
    • Promoting commitment to action
  5. Practised coach/mentoring conversations and received feedback
  6. Carried out an observed session and received feedback based on the National Occupational Standards for Coaching and Mentoring in the Workplace
  7. Gained a methodology and resources which will enable transfer to individual organisations.

METHODOLOGY

  • Participants will work in small groups and pairs to apply and review techniques
  • Participants will undertake and review relevant self-assessments and audits
  • Methods will be highly participative and interactive
  • Learning will be supported by a comprehensive and practical toolkit, customised for CAVS.
