STI’s and Safer Sex Over the Age of 50

  • Date: Friday September 17th 2010
  • Start Time: 9.30 am (this is a half day seminar)
  • Location: Public Health Wales Offices (St David’s Park, Carmarthen)

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are not just a problem for young people: they can affect anyone who is sexually active at any age. Between 1997 and 2006, reported cases of genital warts in the 45-64 age group increased by 56% and chlamydia cases rose by 72%. Society still sees sexual activity among older people as taboo and this attitude makes older people ashamed or embarrassed to admit to being sexually active or seek help if problems arise.

The purpose of this seminar is to address the following:

  • What are the barriers/challenges for healthcare providers and those working in care settings?
  • What are the barriers/challenges for older people?
  • How can you engage with older people to promote positive sexual health messages?
