Making assets work ~ 1-day training 03/03/10

Posted on Thursday, February 4, 2010

“It’s not a quick fix developing an asset; it’s hard work. Developing a business plan is just the start; making it happen, that’s the difficult bit.” Kelvin Jones, Chief Executive Officer, Gorseinon Development Trust

  • Are you thinking about acquiring an asset?
  • Or do you have an asset that could be working harder for you?

Community assets are high on the agenda in Wales with the launch of the Big Lottery Fund’s Community Asset Transfer programme. It is increasingly being recognised that community owned and managed assets can create vibrant and sustainable communities.

But asset transfer and development might not be for everyone. It is not just about the process of developing an asset; it is also concerned with the management of the asset on a day-to-day basis and developing the asset to generate sufficient income to become sustainable.

This one-day training course takes a broad approach to asset development, recognising that organisations may have assets that are visible, like buildings or land, or invisible, such as skills and expertise. It covers the process from identifying the asset, through development and ongoing management, to maximising its income potential. Some of the areas include:

  • Asset based development
  • Managing and maintaining an asset
  • Financial viability and sustainability
  • Financing the asset
  • Asset transfer: policy context and BIG’s Community Asset Transfer fund
  • Sources of support.

A case study presentation by an exemplar organisation will offer a practical insight into the successes and struggles involved in developing and running a community asset.

The course is intended for those wishing to gain an insight into asset based development and how it can assist their organisation to become financially sustainable.

  • 3 March 2010 – Swansea
  • 9 March 2010 – Carno

Cost: £25 +VAT for voluntary and community organisations operating in Wales.
