Developing a Time Credit Scheme in South West Wales

Agency-to-Agency Time Credits – Exchanging time: Building Resilience

27th July 2010

Trinity University, Carmarthen 4.00pm – 6.00pm

The Institute of Welsh Affairs is hosting a seminar on July 27th at 4pm in Trinity University, Carmarthen to introduce a Time Credit scheme to the region.

spiceIn partnership with the Welsh Assembly Climate Change team, Spice Innovations (www.justaddspice.org.uk) intends to extend the agency time credit model it has developed in Wales to encourage the exchange of skills, knowledge and capacity between groups, agencies and businesses with a shared interest in supporting sustainable development and moving towards a low carbon future. It will use time currency as a tool to motivate and underpin these exchanges.

Time currency will allow organisations to use their strengths, core knowledge and spare capacity to bring in new learning that will enhance their ability to effectively carry out organisational goals. In practice, one hour given by one member of the time currency network to another will earn one time credit, which in turn can be used to ‘buy in’ skills or capacity from other participating organisations, also on an hour-for-an-hour basis.

So, for example, a conservation group may have gained three credits by carrying out a three-hour biodiversity survey for a development trust. The group will then be able to use those credits to bring in support and advice from a nearby development trust on developing a fundraising strategy. This will help to create local, needs-based synergies between groups with the ability to strengthen networks, build capacity and embed sustainability in a time of financial austerity.

Spice and the Welsh Assembly Government intend to pilot Agency-to-Agency time credits in the south west region prior to rolling the model out nationally, and are keen to start a conversation with local groups and networks in order to co-design a tool that meets the needs of participants and is sensitive to the organisational landscape in which it is hosted.

The IWA would like to invite representatives of local groups, organisations and networks to attend an event at Trinity University, Carmarthen on July 27th at 4pm at which representatives of Spice and the Welsh Assembly Government will be available to discuss proposals and to give a more in-depth explanation of the model and how it might work in practice.

Please email wales@iwa.org.uk to book your place.

This seminar will be followed by an IWA West Wales branch meeting at 6pm.
