Criminal Records Unit

The WCVA Criminal Records Unit is part of the WCVA Contracts Unit and is funded by the Welsh Assembly. The unit has CRB registered umbrella body status and is set up to help voluntary organisations in Wales access the CRB Disclosure service.

For the last few years, CAVS has been registered with the WCVA Criminal Records Unit to assist voluntary and community groups in the recruitment process of both volunteers and paid staff.

The procedure for carrying out CRB checks is changing, starting from October 2009. There will be a new vetting and barring scheme introduced by the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). New arrangements will require volunteers and staff, taking part in regulated or controlled activities to register with the ISA. These activities may include some roles which do not currently require CRB checks.

The changes will be phased in gradually and will begin with newly recruited staff and volunteers, followed by staff and volunteers in existing roles who have not been CRB checked already.

Registration will not replace the CRB check, and for some roles it will be appropriate to obtain a CRB check in addition to checking ISA registration. As before there will be no charge for volunteers for either element of the vetting process. The charge for paid staff will be £28.00 for the ISA element and £36.00 for the CRB element

It will no longer be possible for CAVS to be involved in the process. Organisations will be required to contact the WCVA CRU themselves in future in order to obtain CRB checks and to carry out the ISA and CRB checks when the new procedures are phased in. There is no longer a minimum number requirement for organisations requesting CRB checks.
